The competition is open to all under-graduate and post-graduate students who work on a supervised project in the area of electromagnetic engineering and make use of FEKO, Altair's comprehensive electromagnetic (EM) analysis software suite, included in HyperWorks®.

Altair, a US-based engineering company, recently acquired EM Software & Systems - S.A., makers of FEKO® electromagnetic field analysis software. FEKO is now becoming part of Altair’s computer-aided engineering (CAE) suite HyperWorks®. With this move, Altair gains a local presence in South Africa with tremendous depth of industry expertise. Personnel in Stellenbosch will be responsible for all sales and support activities in the region.

An agreement-in-principle has been reached between Altair and EMSS, pursuant to which Altair will acquire 100 percent of EM Software & Systems – S.A. EM Software & Systems – S.A. (Pty) Ltd announced that from 1 September 2013 all import and export CAD filters will be enabled in the FEKO Silver, Gold and Platinum Licences free of charge.

Complex solution algorithms as available in FEKO (e.g. MoM, PO, UTD, FEM, or MLFMM) were historically not well suited to acceleration with GPUs (graphical processing units). These worked best for FDTD or similar, where the same operation is repeated over and over again. However, recent advances in software technology have made it possible to accelerate run-time intensive solution phases in FEKO. (December 2009)

The licencing policy for parallel processing is changed with FEKO Suite 5.4 to count CPUs, rather than cores. A sequential licence can now simulate in parallel on all cores of a single CPU. FEKO is made available on the new EM64T technology from Intel. The main advantage of this technology is that it supports both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. A 32-bit application has an inherent 2 GByte memory limitation. When using 64-bit technology the FEKO kernel does not suffer from this restriction, allowing the in-core solution of problems with more unknowns. (December 2004)
FEKO, introduces the Multi-Level Fast Multipole Method (MLFMM) to the market through Suite 4.2. Although the MLFMM has been researched at several research institutions for many years, FEKO is the first commercial code to bring it to the market for general 3D structures. The MLFMM is an efficient method of calculating the interaction between structures that are electrically far apart, retaining the accuracy of the method of moments, but enabling the analysis of significantly larger problems because much less memory is required. Applications include analysis of electrically large antennas, e.g. reflectors and antenna placement on large platforms, e.g. ships, automobiles and aircraft. (June 2004)

MOASOFT Corporation is well known and respected in the field of EMC simulation and related technologies. The company was established in 1996 in order to support the growing demand for Total Solutions, Reliability Analysis/Consulting, Mathematical Analysis, Statistical Analysis, High-Frequency Design, PCB Artwork, various EDA CAD tools and EMC in the South Korean market. FEKO released for Intel (64-bit Itanium), available on Windows, Linux, HP-UX. Supports parallel processing on Linux and HP-UX. Using the powerful Itanium processors, FEKO is relieved of the memory restrictions normally associated with 32-bit systems. (December 2003)
In recognition of outstanding innovation, a certificate is awarded by the Department of Trade and Industry, to EM Software & Systems (Pty) Ltd for the Advanced FEKO Code Development Project. The project was done through the Support Program for Industrial Innovation (SPII), and EMSS were selected as a finalist from a field of 76 entries. (October 2002)
